Front Axle Repair

by Ron Corwin
I had to rebuild the left front axle when my drive shaft splines went away.
The tractor is a NorTrac 254. Northern tools supplied all parts and warranted my work.
The driving shaft washer is supposed to be in two pieces. Make you get two new pieces as they become sprung when they are removed. They are held in place by the driven gear.
Once the driven gear is removed, pop out the Driving gear washer. Remove the shaft, washer, seals, and bearing.

The seals are installed back to back. They are not the same. The bearings install easily, but you will need a hydraulic press to install the driving shaft through the bearing.
After the shaft is installed, place the washer on the shaft. Then tap the driving shaft washer into the grove with a screw driver.
Place the driven gear on the shaft, and press it in place with a hydraulic press. It will bang like a gunshot when it pops over the driving shaft washer.
The bearing goes onto the shaft easily. This is set aside at this time.
The picture says it all
This bolt is under the upper bearing cover. When you remove it, be ready. The housing will drop down.

Like I said.
Three piece Rolling Bearing 8103. You must reinstall the standing shaft before you insert this into the hole.
Note the position of the drain plug on the lower bearing cover.
Tap on the top of the shaft and it will come out the bottom. Did I say that the bearing are not in very tight.
The shaft passes through the lower driving gear. This is not where the 3 piece bearing fits.
If needed, remove the upper driven gear and bearing with a brass drift.
You will need a bearing separator to remove the bearing from the gear.
Install a new felt washer before installing the housing. I hope you didn’t forget to install that three piece bearing after you inserted the shaft. Don’t worry about the housing moving up and down after you install the washer and bolt on the top of the shaft. The knuckle will pull it up tight. There is also an O-ring that goes on the upper bearing cover under the knuckle.
